A German book company, Eichborn, decided to think beyond the booth at the 2009 Frankfurt Book. Eichborn’s 'smallest commercial gimmick in the world' consisted of attaching physical banner ads to actual flies. Yes, they tied small red Eichborn banner ads to flies and let them loose in the Frankfurt Book Fair. Something tells me PETA might get involved!
UK's first online flash mob
The time came and went and if you weren't already on the site, blink and you'd missed it.
To launch the Hopper Invasion of the Sony Ericsson Satio a flashmob online had been set up.
It wasn't the most exciting thing in the world, but I wonder how many hits Yahoo got that very minute, and given the amount of PR it may create, at least the product will get a lot of airtime.

Personally a real life flashmob is much better, but as we move into the digital world more and more. Giving people an incentive to get online and discover more is great especially if it literally takes 30 seconds out of your day. Long live the digital generation and the ways we can interact with each other.
Here's what happened in screen grab from but you can watch the video at the bottom of the page. I also wonder what happened on an iPhone...

BNP Question Time
People have too much time on their hands. A brilliant edit of what everybody really thinks of the BNP leader. Bravo.

Windows 7
Launched yesterday, and I got this email from ZoneAlarm... just incase you thought viruses were a thing of the past... think again.

I just buy a Mac and don't have any troubles.

I just buy a Mac and don't have any troubles. Also a nice little video has been created to mock the Windows 7 Hosting Party advert.
The real ad is below.
The better ad is below that.
Enjoy!
New SCS Sofa Advert
Made by Martin Tait Redheads, the new SCS sofa ad has gone all Strictly Come Dancing on us. I know a £10 a month brief sofa draws you to a 10 out of 10 scenario, but cheap sofa ads surely have a better way to be sold. I almost want to have a crack one / make my own, see scamps when I have 5 minutes.
In the meantime... enjoy the screen grabs and a dodgy Bruno.

Oddly I couldn't find them on youtube, so you will have to click here and select video 3 and 4 for the adverts.

Our website is going to be in Scamp's book!
This greeted our email box this morning:
This image perhaps?
Damn right you can use it! The more the merrier!
Dear 'We Are Crap' Team,
I am doing the picture research for Simon Veksner's impending publication How to Make it as an Ad Creative.
We would like to feature the attached image in a chapter showing online portfolios that show personality as well as work and would need to clear permission to use it.
This image perhaps?
Damn right you can use it! The more the merrier! We get a mention from the legendary blogger Scamp in his book = awesome
It's odd when we thought about making the site, we had no idea it would work so well in our favour, we just did what we thought was fun and interesting. Sticking our faces on it meant people see who we are before they have met us and we've even been recognised by fellow creatives that we have never met. Now that is a surreal moment! But it gets us across to them quicker what we are about. They don't need to look at the work to get a sense of the type of things we do.

So remember, a website is not just for showing work, it's a place to have fun!
Right, I'm off to make some videos.
My idea is in art
I blogged yesterday about the 24 hour drawing twitter project with Johanna Basford, and I can reveal my suggestion made the cut.

I asked for:
@johannabasford a protest against high
polo mint prices on a banner or a sandwich
board with an angry young man
and yes that angry young man was meant to be me.
Well she's just put up her picture and yes there I am, in the top right corner, I even got a pun. Perfect!

Apologies for the terrible screen shot quality.
Johanna Basford
Is making a new picture taking inspiration from twitter users. She has 48 hours, about a quarter left as of me writing this post, to draw whatever is tweeted on her page.
In her own words:
In her own words:The print will be in my signature style of intricate hand penned curiosities, formed into a delicate sphere. What goes into that circle, is up to you. I'm putting the public in charge of creative content and relinquishing all decisions to you.
To get involved, all you have to do is tweet me what would like to see included and I'll diligently draw each and every twitter suggestion* (except anything deemed too rude for innocent eyes!). So be it a pirate ship, a yeti footprint, a medieval castle or a Venus fly trap, all your twitter suggestions will be translated into pen and ink to create an eclectic snap shot of Twitter imaginations over a 2 day period. *Just one suggestion each, so think carefully and make it count!
I'll be officially opening up the Twitter Suggestion Box and drawing the live artwork on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th October from 9am till 5pm. TwitPic snap shots of the design in progress will be posted at 15 minute intervals throughout the 2 days to allow you to see the progress of the piece and to spot your suggestion as it appears in the artwork.
Get your thought on the page here
And more on the story here
Great iPhone app
Worth £2.99 (if you can find it on the App store that is). Simple, brilliant and damn right funny.
Collected feeds

It appeared on the 1st of October, the newest all in one feed machine to date, and the best looking in my opinion.
www.collected.at, pulls all your feeds from wherever you choose, into one single place, then makes them look pretty too.
Friendfeed has been doing it awhile but front end design it doesn't compare. This is the next big thing in social networking as you now only need to check 1 web page vs many.
You can even build your own and put other people's feeds in, so you could literally never leave the site! Also, if you have the urge to live in my digital realm instead of Twitter, Blog, Youtube and Flickr, feel free to join the newest page here.
By any means
***News flash***
Illegal immigrants have managed to land on our fair shores by paddling across the North Sea and floating down the Water of Leith on an inflatable play pit. I must admit the picture quality is poor and the story isn't true but I spent the whole 2 minutes it takes me to walk past this and get into the office to create a story.

Leith Dock
C.R. and I have been given the privilege of being second in command on Leith's twitter, and Blog; Leith Dock. Not sure how we've managed to get this wonderful job, but we'll keep your mind's inspired and your day filled with links from the world of Leith.
It is not just an ad agency up here. It is a community. Leith Records is a new venture by them, which showcases the newest Scottish talent in the music scene, while Leith is heavily involved in We Love Leith, Greener Leith, Leith Festival, Leith FM and anything other Leithy things that are going on.
On top all of this, we have also be given the challenge to bring their website into 2010, not an easy job!
You can find Leith on
Hopefully you'll enjoy twice the APness from now on.
Youtube hits 1 billion views a day
If it's on their logo, it has to be true. Yesterday Youtube officially launched the tweak to the logo that proves they are by far one of the most popular sites on the web.
72% of all video content on the internet highway comes from Youtube, and I think that is a staggering amount. I guess with the ability to embed content onto blogs, websites etc this makes sharing using youtube easy. Even with the likes of twitter and delicious continuously linking to the site a billion views daily still seems fake.
I can't seem to sit on youtube all day, I prefer Vimeo, but very rarely do you see a link to that or any other video streaming site that isn't youtube. Fox and Hulu the second and third biggest video streaming sites hold a mere 5 and 4% share respectively, which frankly is embarassing. Tesco Value Ketchup flavoured Ketchup probably gets 5% of sales in the Ketchup market vs Heinz, and it would certainly not call it the 2nd best ketchup!
I guess it really is the youtube generation.
Dead fly art
I can't quite believe I'm talking about flies, but I've found these, and I think they are really cool. Unfortunately the owner does not tell us their name, which is disappointing because I want to see what else they do (I'm guessing they are German though).
A stale subject has been brought to life with just a few lines of graphite.
Nice, but really?
I can't believe I'm making another post about the logo, they must have hired a new art department. Though I must admit, the invention of the barcode is hardly something that warrants a Google logo, style over content perhaps.

It's Sigourney Weaver's birthday tomorrow, perhaps we may see an Alien Google logo, unless they think that's going too far.

P.S. If you're in Safari using snow leopard/any other OS. Hit new window N but don't move the mouse... does it look like this? Cos mine does.

All the buttons then fade in when you move the cursor... strange
Crazy inventions
Pottering around on the web has led me to totallyabsurd.com home to over 400 inventions that have actually got patents on them. As creatives, we're always on the look out for gaps in the market and interesting ways to solve those everyday problems. Just like these,

Butt cleavage pants, who wouldn't want an attractive way to show of their crack.
Beach boots, for those times when flip flops or walking barefeet just won't do.
For those of you without ears but need glasses, try stud spectacles, conveniently drilled through your nose.

The dad saddle comes close to my favourite, for those little cowboys who can't walk yet.
And my favourite, which has also led to a Foster's campaign; The Beer Brella, the most have accessory for that cold bottle of San Miguel.
You know those Dixons ads
The ones that are getting a lot of good hype. Yes you know them. Right now look at this. Pastiche, lazy or of the time?
From this...
To this.

Big Al's Creative Emporium has taken upon themselves to get a lot of PR about a really nice piece and then tell everyone they can do the same but cheaper. Hmmm, in cyan and white though?
