AP Hols

We finished at the Union yesterday, next stop Leith in 3 weeks.
Full report to appear here soon, but in the meantime I'm off to enjoy 2 weeks in the sun...

See you soon!

Placement

Crit 59 was more of an interview.

3 months at Leith.

That will do just nicely! :D

Us ever so slightly pleased.

How many book crits does it take to get a job...?

We have a Facebook page that lists everything we have done as a team since day 1. Yep that's right. We even remember the work that was in the porty... As I updated the page yesterday I realised how many book crits we've actually had. We currently stand at 59 as of this evening at Leith. As most people are aware, that's probably quite a lot... but is it really? Years ago it may have been long since we'd given up. But the new breed out there, does that sound a lot to you? We've done 5 placements accumulating in one years worth of work. 6 months at Union, 2 at The Red Brick Road and Inferno, 1 at Hooper Galton, and a couple of weeks at Amp, oh and not forgetting we blagged a day at Fallon at Flintham's desk.

It took 34 crits to get to our first placement. So that stat is screws with a table. If I make 1... thinks about opening excel... decides it would make me look professional.

So here's my graph.
NB: Graph includes handing books in

It's a beauty, isn't it.

(Waits for laugh)

It makes interesting reading, if it makes any sense to you. Placement 1 (Fallon) took 34 crits, Hooper Galton 2, The Red Brick Road 2, Inferno 6 crits. Amp was a mere 0, then Union took a beating at 12 and we are now on 3 and counting.

That now looks better reading. Does that look good to you? Should we have been hired by now or are is everyone going through at the moment?

P.S. I know I get at least 30 hits a day so please give me a comment or 2 now and again, it would be nice. No graphs here I promise.

Maths session finshed. Enjoy your day.

Augmented Reality Business Card

Augmented reality is slowly starting to take off. So some clever sod has put a graphic on the back and made his business card come to life! It's a great idea

The only downside is that the receiver of the business card needs a computer to see the content on it. Of course you can simply print the graphic on one side and then your usual name and address on the other side but that spoils half the fun doesn't it?!

Oh and James Aliban does a lot of cool AR stuff... like this:

More on his vimeo page

And this is too cool. I did not know you could embed the ability to phone someone while using AR, well so long as you are viewing it through your iPhone that is.

Amusing Techy Letter

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and I noticed a distinct slowdown in the overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as
Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NEWS 5.0, MONEY 3.0 and CRICKET 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5..3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed,
___________

DEAR Madam,

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.
Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme. html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5..

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Silence 2.5 or Beer 6.1.
Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.
You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance.
We recommend: Cooking 3.0 and Hot Looks 7.7.

Good Luck Madam!

Honda Choir (ish)

I was shown this the other day from my dad's music teacher Matt Love (of all people).

It just shows how everyone can find inspiration from anything and everything to create a great track. The beginning is amazing, I'm afraid I got slightly bored near the end. But it's worth watching the first minute or so.

Enjoy!

Google Gravity

This is cute.

Google search in zero gravity, in can pick up bits and throw it around the screen. Then search something and the results all fall to the fall as well.

Sadly once you leave the Google site it all goes back to normal. Have a play here

Hot desking at agencies

Hot desking, have you heard of it? Renting a desk in an office of the company that owns it, for, well lets say, a pretty decent price. An airconned 4 foot squarepatch that can become a base for a hive of activity. I know NABS offer a superb palce in which to propel yourself into book crits from, but what if advertising agencies offered us young people hot desks to work from.

We pay them a nominal fee for a week to sit in a creative environment and maybe gain some experience. Who knows, you may be able to steal a brief or two and claim you're the new freelance team!

Wouldn't it be great going to other agencies and when they say, "where are you working at the moment?" and you could tell a little white lie and say your currently at AMV or Fallon and omit the fact you are hot desking. Is that kudos or cheek? In my opinion it's trying to think outside the box while living in one.

When CR and I are in London, we need a base, we've used pubs, bars, galleries, and a library, but wouldn't an advertising agency be better? Surely in times like these some places are desperate to earn some money back by just having a couple of strangers in the corner for a period of time.

I think if we go a few weeks without work I may use this idea and see how far it gets me. Yes it means paying them money for a placement, but when needs must and you can do all nighters/sleep in the office that has to be a good idea...

Any thoughts...

Google Moon

To celebrate the moon landings, Google Earth has now started Google Moon

It's not very big at the moment, but imagine the potential that Google's mapping technology could create. We could all go to the Moon or Mars and use Streetview to see what it is really like.

I love this thought. It could get so many people into space and the possibility of the 'something more' which is out there.

The big debate recently is whether we should send people to the map. Maybe we should. We could map it, see where I bought my plot of land (I have the certificate for an acre of land) and generally be intrigued by something that is an amazing rock that not enough people appreciate.

Graduation and MJ

Found this via twitter... how wrong they were.

In other news, I graduated yesterday! Gown, robe, mortarboard and I went to Sunderland's Stadium of Light, yep, actually in the stands!

I actually looked half decent for once, a shirt and tie is almost unheard of with me.

I'll find some better pictures when I get them off my dad's camera.

That'll do for today. A day off means lots of work left for today.

Coca Cola sticky bus shelter

This is really cool. Simple but effective as hell. More more more... but don't just copy :)

Facebook Art

I've never looked at Facebook as art. Until 2 groups appeared next to each other and suddenly I had a piece of 'creepy art'. That is a technical term, honest! (and I have an A-level in art haha).

Some bad news

We've heard that our placement at the Union is going to end at the end of July as they are looking to hire a mid weight team to cope with the continuous heavy work-load that we are currently experiencing. It's hard to put into words how we feel because we really thought that we'd proved ourselves to our ECD. We've worked the hardest we've ever had to before in terms of workload but we've still managed to crack every brief and on time too (honest!).

We've learnt so much in 6 months here that I wouldn't have thought possible in February. We've done 2 virals, a TV shoot, 4 or 5 radio ads and countless press ads along with learning to edit on our own and direct a shoot with just us and a video camera.

We're still getting great opportunities, a huge Scottish Sun brief is on the desk and our SQA campaigns are in testing tomorrow, which if our favourite wins, it'll be a great piece to have in our book.

So where next you may be thinking...

We're looking in Edinburgh and London but have 4 weeks here left to still get something corking out so no slacking on our part.

If you're reading this and are interested in our services, don't hesitate to email us at rush_peel (at) hotmail (dot) co (dot) uk and we'll happily come for a chat.

Our book is next on the agenda to refresh and update as there is plenty of things in the pipeline we want to get our teeth into.

Find love with a book

This arrived in my emails the other day.

Everybody now wants a new way to sell their brand name. It's a shame there are so many dating websites out there because I think this one is quite cute as a marketing ploy.

We all know the traditional boy meets girl and falls in love of a book routine... well now it can happen.

A.P. passes his degree

It's official, Mr Postie delivered my results this morning

1st Class Honours in Advertising and Design at Sunderland. Woo! And I've managed to spend the whole of my third year completely on placement. I'm chuffed. I know your portfolio is the real thing that gets you a job, but a have a piece of paper and that's always a good thing.

Graduation on the 16th July, I may post the embarrassing picture.

Right back to work, a pile of briefs to get through.

Aleksandr does his first interview

video
He's awesome, The Sun interviewed him (video above) and these are my favourite answers from that video.

He's a cult and it's amazing how something as simple as a Meerkat can change the views of "cheeeap car in shurance".

Q. Do you see yourself as a bit of a heartthrob?
A. Yes, I had terrible heartthrob after a spicy fire ant and scorpion curry last week.

Q. Is there a Mrs Meerkat?
A. I am marry to my work. My desk is my wife and my collection of antique twin-pin staplers, my sexy weekend mistress.

Q. Facebook vs Twitter - you're huge on both, but which do your prefer?
A. I have great many good friends on Facebook, but I like Twitter - it is easiest way to keep people up to date on what I am having for breakfast. Today I had termite toasty.

Simples. I love him
